This type of community activity is a continuation of the Trench Rat Tradition, as instituted by Volney P. Mooney, who was the first Imperial Golden Rodent, and others. He was instrumental in the founding of our organization. He was hospitalized in a “veteran’s hospital” as a result of injuries received in WW I. “The hospital was isolated and there were no activities for the patients to pass the time, the majority of whom were ambulatory. A few members of his DAV Chapter conceived the idea of organizing a group of the most active members as a secret, fraternal society and devised an initiation ceremony for fun and amusement and invited for membership only those DAV members who were most active in the Chapter. We as today’s most active members are still providing fun and amusement to veterans and other in local nursing homes.
